Limiter – A new app from Amazing Noises

The new app Limiter has just been released on the App Store. While this app is being sold under the developer Amazing Noises, it is a collaboration between Maurizio Giri (Amazing Noises) and Alessandro Petrolati (apeSoft). This was the same team that gave us the great GliderVerb app quite recently. Limiter serves a very simple purpose, as a brickwall peak limiting app.

There are four parameters here, as seen above. The Input Gain can be used to increase or attenuate the input amplitude. The "Lookahead" slider is measured in milliseconds, and is used to (according the User Guide) "know the sound trajectory in advance and to modify the amplitude accordingly". The Release is also a measure of time, and is the amount of time to return to full amplitude. The Ceiling slider sets the amplitude threshold (or 'ceiling').

Just a note here: The app is universal. The screenshot above is from the iPad, which can be used in both the Portrait and Landscape modes. The iPhone version differs slightly in appearance, as it has virtual knobs in place of sliders.

There are some presets included in the app, which can assist you with setting up for various settings, such as Gentle Limit or High Gain, for example.

From the Amazing Noises website:

The Amazing Noises Limiter it has a wide range of dynamic processing:
from very gentle volume attenuation to heavy distortion (if you want it!).

Main Features:

- Audiobus and Inter-App Audio support
- Brickwall Limiter
- Live Normalizer
- Control Manager LFO for Parameters
- Midibus, Virtual Midi and Network: 14 bit NRPN controllers
- Snapshots Presets Morphing Pad

It's a pretty straight forward app. This app will help make sure you're not clipping on the high ends. Consider it a bit of a safety net, especially useful I imagine if you're playing live. It's available for $0.99, so it's definitely affordable. Also, stay tuned to iOS MARS for reviews of upcoming apps from Amazing Noises ("Reverb") and apeSoft ("Sparkle").
