PhaseRings gets a great update – Audiobus compatibility and more!

PhaseRings, by developer Charles Martin, just got an update today, making it much more usable for iOS musicians. This update brings in both Audiobus and Inter-App Audio (IAA) compatibility, so you can now send these sweet sounds through your favorite effects apps, and into your DAW of choice.

In addition, there is now full MIDI support, as well as a neat feature that lets you sync up PhaseRings across multiple devices on the same wifi network. This will keep all the devices on the same scale setup, which is great for playing in an ensemble. Here's a video of the app in action, using four iPads.

As you can see, this app is super intuitive to use. You can set up each composition with three different scales, and you can either tap on the various rings, or tap and "drag" to get a sustained note. There are seven preset sounds in the app, including marimba, gongs, singing bowls, and some synthesized sounds. These all sounds really lush. This app is great for ambient pieces. I've been sending it through AUFX: Space and AUFX: Dub, and it is fantastic. I'm going to be spending more time sending this through some more effects apps, like Dedalus or Reverb FDN.

And here's the big kicker: it's free! The only excuse you've got for not getting this right now is that it requires iOS 8 or higher. So, if you're on iOS 8, click the link below to pick this up!
