Enkl – The new monophonic synth app from Klevgränd Produktion AB

Klevgränd Produktion AB are at it again, but this time with a new synth app. Called Enkl (which is a derivation of the Swedish word "Enkel", or easy), it is a monophonic synthesizer that is capable of making some really diverse sounds.

Enkl features two oscillators, each with a dedicated LFO. You'll find the typical waveforms here, with triangle, sawtooth, square and noise. Each oscillator also has a separate option to use the filter. Looking at the screenshot below, you can see that the interface is in line with other Klevgränd apps - clean and simple. But don't think that the app is simple. Klevgränd just finds the best ways to pack in all the necessary tools in a beautiful way.

As you can see, the center section contains your filter controls (low cut and high cut filters), along with a resonance knob and the filter attack knob. Knobs for glide, legato and arpeggio on/off and speed are also here. A simple ADSR slider control is located right above the large volume control, with the "FX" button rounding it out.

The effects included in Enkl are sparse, but quite nice. A simple delay and three-band EQ are easily adjusted here. There's some decent amount of range on the delay here, too.

So, the virtual keyboard here is real basic. A one octave keyboard, that can be adjusted up and down octaves with the arrows, allows for some very simple note entry. Your options here are to plug in an external MIDI keyboard, or use the scale keyboard, which is accessed from the magnifying glass. At my first playthrough of the app, I didn't even see this, so I'm glad I read the manual.

Using this keyboard, you can select key and scale, as well as the octave. Choose from chromatic, major, minor, or pentatonic. Where this gets neat, and differs from many simple "scale keyboards", is that can choose to control certain parameters based on the vertical and horizontal position of your finger. On the horizontal axis you can control the pitch bend, and you can choose either filter or modulation for the vertical axis. This adds some real character to your playing, and is a lot of fun.

I've reviewed almost all of the other Klevgränd apps before (see here for my effects roundup), and it's no secret I'm a big fan of the way these guys go about app development. Simple yet innovative interfaces, combined with small app sizes and reasonable prices, these guys are doing it right. It's great to see them venturing out into synth production, as Enkl is a great mono synth. Perfect for someone who likes to tweak parameters, but might be intimidated by some of the other beasts, Enkl is a great addition to anyone's synth arsenal.
