I've slowly started dipping my toes into the world of hardware synths. While I had been exclusively iOS for many years (with the exception of my guitars, of course), I had managed to resist the siren song of analog synths. Until, I finally bought an Arturia MicroBrute earlier this year. A great synthesizer at an affordable price, the MicroBrute was a great way for me to enter the analog world.
But, since I am exclusively recording into my iPad, meaning no PC DAW, I don't even have my PC in my studio. So, when I want to change the internal configuration of my MicroBrute, I have to unplug all my chords and bring the Brute downstairs to plug in, and use the downloaded Arturia software to make changes.
Not anymore, thanks to MIDIBrute by Numerical Audio.
This new iOS app allows you to plug your MicroBrute (or MiniBrute) directly into your iOS device, and make all of your configuration changes - no PC required. As iOS devices are increasingly becoming less reliant on PC connections (no more iTunes Sharing!), this app is perfect.
If you've used the Arturia configuration software, you'll immediately be familiar with the controls and settings here. All the setting for your sequencer, gate, and MIDI Channels are right here. There is even an option to send MIDI clock, which is a nice addition. With the MIDI clock, you can set your MicroBrute sequencer to a specific BPM.
There's really not much more to say about this app. It's less than 1 mb in size, and sells for only $1.99. If you are like me, and find it inconvenient to plug your 'Brute to your PC, then this is a no-brainer purchase.
