PressIt multiband compressor – A new compressor app from Klevgränd Produktion AB

After boldly promising on Twitter to release a new app every month, the developers from Klevgränd have delivered the first app. Enter PressIt, a multiband compressor app for iPad. Check out their release demo video below:

Keeping with their previous interface sensibilities, PressIt provides a simple interface that emphasizes using your ears to find your sound. As this is a multiband compressor, you'll find exactly what you'd expect - three compressor bands for your tweaking pleasure. These all work independently, and then come together into the final output. They've also included a limiter on the final output, to prevent nasty distortion (optional, so if you like distortion, you can still have it).

The app comes with six presets, but really this app is best used when you make your own adjustments. And making those adjustments is simple. From left to right you have three columns that represent the low, mid, and high end compressors. Each of these is subdivided into a threshold and ratio control. Simply sliding these up or down will change your parameters. There are also controls for attack, release and make up gain on each compressor.

Anyone who's read my columns knows that I'm pretty much a self-taught musician. With that, I don't have much background in mixing and mastering. I just make loud guitar sounds most of the time, and either turn my distortion pedal on or off. But, I do have ears. And with PressIt, I can simply fiddle about until I find a sound that works. That's the best compliment I can give to PressIt. I don't need to know *how* it works, I just know that it *does* work, and it works very well.

As usual, Klevgränd has created another gem of an app. I've reviewed most of their apps previously, and I love them. They are all simple for me to use, and does "exactly what it says on the tin", as my British father-in-law would say. Klevgränd has promised a new app every month this fall (or autumn to everyone else outside the US), and I'm very excited to see what's coming next month. But for September, go get PressIt. It's a beauty.
